Read this before replacing batteries – 4 points to keep in mind

1) Battery chemistry : 

Select a new battery which is having the same battery chemistry as of the old battery. If the old battery is a Li-Ion battery then replace it with a Li-Ion battery. We cannot replace a Ni-MH battery in place of the Li-Ion battery and vice versa. 

When a manufacturer intended a Lithium Ion battery to be used in their device, They also provided a charging circuit or adapter along with it. When we replace a Ni-MH battery in place of a Lithium Ion battery, this charger circuit which was intended to charge Lithium Ion batteries, will not be able to charge this Ni-MH battery. 

So always select a new battery of same battery chemistry as of the old one. 

2) Voltage rating : 

When you select a new battery it should have the same voltage rating as the old battery.

If you select a battery which is having a higher voltage rating then, this higher voltage will damage the device.

If you select battery with lower voltage rating then the device will not function. 

3) mAH (Milli Ampere Hour) rating : 

When you select a battery it should have same or higher mAH rating compared to the older battery. 

If you select a battery which is having a higher mAH rating then the back up time of the device with the new battery will be more compared to the old battery. 

If you select a battery which is having a lower mAH rating then the back up time of the device with the new battery will be lesser compared to the old battery. 

4) Charging and Discharging rates : 

When you select a battery it should have same or higher charging and discharging rates compared to the older battery. 

If you select a battery which is having a lower charging rate than the older battery then the charging circuit which is designed to be used with the older battery might try to push in more charging current into the new battery than it can handle, resulting in a damage to the battery.

If you select a battery which is having a lower discharging rate than the older battery then the device which is designed to be used with the older battery might try to draw more current from the new battery than it can source, resulting in a damage to the battery.
